There Ain’t No Mountain Too High, With The Right Attitude

The world is a beautiful place, waiting to be discovered – whether it’s on the water or up in the mountains. At Ocean Craft Marine, we believe in nurturing curiosity, celebrating teamwork, solving problems and pushing boundaries, in our work and in our lives. No one embodies these ideals more than our founder, Roy Nouhra.

Roy and his two oldest sons (aged 9 and 10) recently returned from an expedition to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Located at 17000+ feet, the camp serves as a base for climbers while they acclimatise themselves before tackling the final stretch. It takes 14 days to make the trek from Kathmandu to the Everest Base Camp. Doing so demands endurance and perseverance as it involves being on the trail for about 5 hours every day, often with a pack. Although the journey takes one across some of the most beautiful – and occasionally difficult – terrain in the world, it also offers plenty of challenges to both novice and experienced climbers. These include dealing with altitude sickness, coping with extremely low temperatures – particularly at night, sleeping outdoors in a tent, and taking precautions to avoid infections and insect bites.

Roy’s approach to climbing is similar to his approach to life. In his book, there’s no need to rush. One must hope for the best and prepare for the worst – which is a sound advice especially when tackling a climb such as this. Someone who practises what he preaches, Roy believes that it is important to just take in everything, face each obstacle as it presents itself and find a solution together. And overarching it all is his certainty that a positive attitude is half the battle won. In his book, it is the journey rather than the destination that matters – with all the experiences that it brings, both good and bad.

Our congratulations to Roy and his boys, who are among the youngest climbers in the world to have made the journey, on their great accomplishment.
